I started the engine up the other day and took the cowling off to check things out and make sure they were all in order. After I shut the engine off after about 5 mins of idling in the driveway I noticed that my starter was still spinning ( but wasn't engaged to the flywheel). I shut off my battery and disconnected the starter so it wouldn't overheat, because I still needed to trim it back up to put it in the garage. It is still disconnected, but I don't know what would cause it to keep spinning even after the key is turned off.

I would assume it is some sort of short in the wiring to the key, but im really not sure so I thought I should ask you guys.

Engine is a 1989 Mercury Blackmax 150hp

Re: starter motor

It's probably a bad starter solonoid or ignition switch. Disconnect one of the two smallest gauge wires from the solonoid and see if the starter still spins when you hook it back up. If so it's a stuck solonoid.
Eric
