Starter motors for my 1976 Evinrude 25hp?

I have a manual start 1976 Evinrude 25hp, that i want to upgrade to electric start. The flywheel is toothed, and i know what components i need to do the upgrade.

My friend bought a starter, bracket & solenoid he thinks and was told will work on my motor. I traced the part numbers 392133 (starter) & 331210 (bracket) and they came from a 1985-87 E/J 25hp.

Going stricly by the part numbers, obviously they don't match...i need 385401 (starter) & 317328 (bracket). What i can't find is what the actual difference is between the years, specifically on the starter motor. What i want to know is if the teeth on the starter motor will mesh with the teeth on my motors flywheel.

I know the bracket is slightly different by trying to dry fit it. I found that it will bolt up with small modifications. Bolt pattern is the same but there are small dimensional differences that would require some filing of the bracket for fitment/clearance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

yes the bracket is different....I believe the starters are the same tho....but the problem will be the timing pointer on the bracket may be different....and by modding it ..it may have a problem with the engaging of the bendix to the flywheel with the right clearance specs....

so there may be a difference since they changed styles.....

I see them brackets alot on Ebay.....I broke mine and while looking for one for a 83..I seen lots of the 70 versions and they were different than mine...they changed in 78 or 79 I believe to the style the 1980 motors use....

the see if the bendixs are the same look them up....some are 11 tooth and some are 9 tooth....depending on years and motor....

If you can hold the starter by hand up against the teeth in your flywheel and have a look. It will be obvious if it will mesh or not. Other than that, it should work ok.
