Starter Noise

Over the winter i rewired my dash. I was having a problem with getting voltage to the coil. 89 Mercruiser 350 magnum would turn over but not fire. Fixed the problem, but when I went to start today i was greeted with a clucking sound from the starter as though something was holding the engine from turning over. In my mind I could picture the gear on the starter pushing out to engage the flywheel, but instead not lining up and "hitting" the flywheel . Tried a few more times and got a nasty girrrrrrr as though the starter was spinning against the flywheel and not engaging. Gave up after that noise :D What do you think this could be? Please rule out ideas about the engine being seized as it turns over with a breaker bar. Also rule out anything being bound in the leg as it is removed and working well. I'm wondering if it could relate back to the wiring of the dash. My plans were to be pulling this engine any way to fix a rear main leak but I find it strange that this would turn up the day I was planning to pull it (by the way is that a 1 1/16 inch nut on the front motor mount?). Any help is appreciated.

Re: Starter Noise

Low voltage in the battery (Get it load tested, not just a voltage check) loose or dirty battery connections, corroded cable ends (Both ends, both pos & neg cables)

Don't know, can't see it.......
Put a 1 1/16" wrench on it and find out. If it's too big, try a 15/16" wrench.

Re: Starter Noise

You know 2 weeks ago (after I wired the dash), I turned on every piece of lighting, the blowers, the stereo etc. and left all of it on for 3 hours to check everything out and see how things would effect my (new) dual 850 amp deep cells. When I went back out everything turned over with great urgency and all the lighting was super bright. The cable ends (on the batteries) were replaced as part of my dash project. Thanks for the ideas. Wouldn't hurt to pull those bad boys out and put them on the charger. I guess I have never herd a sound quite like this before.
