starter not engaging flywheel

Hi Everyone,
I have a '77 Merc 850. We went out on the lake and it started no problem. We stopped to fish and then when we were ready to leave, the starter wouldn't engage the flywheel. It would simply turn. The voltage on the battery is fine. The problem is intermittent. The next time I go, the motor will start without a problem. Could this be a sign that the starter is going? Any suggestions?​

Try using a light oil lube on the starter shaft where the starter gear travels. Sounds like it may be getting sticky or out of lube. If sticky, you may need to clean the shaft first. JH

If it's still doing it after you lube the shaft and check that the bendix gear operates, check the battery connections. This is exactly what can happen when you have dirty connections. You'll get enough current to turn the motor, but not enough current for it to take a load. So, it turns, but not hard enough or fast enough to sling the gear out to full engagement. Or, it will engage, but can't turn the flywheel or disengage.

I greased up the shaft yesterday which the bendix is moving much better now. I also noticed when I disconnected the battery to work on the motor and then reconnected without tightening the connection on the terminals to test, I noticed it made a big difference. When I tightened the connections, everything worked great! I also made myself a pull cord and have it on the boat at all times just in case. One of the things you don't think about having until it actually happens!! I got stranded on the lake with the family over the weekend. Good thing the wind was strong to make us drift towards some cottagers which we eventually got pulled in by a passer-by!!
