Starter on 120 Johnson won't engage

I have a 120 VRO Johnson. Australian built. Circa 1990. The starter just spins when I crank it, it doesn't move up to engage the flywheel. I have plenty of battery power, and it hasn't done this before. Will some CRC or WD40 sprayed down there do any harm? What else can I do to fix this?

Hello Johnny and welcome to iboats!

Yep, little WD-40 might work. Put a few drops on the shaft that the bedix rides on, spin it up and down several times by hand and give her another shot. Make sure you don't over do the WD-40. You get some in on the rubber clutch and you will have a problem.

Let us know how you make out.

Thanks all you guys. With the help of a mate, I got it freed up with a tiny amount of WD40, and a gentle upward tapping. Running freely now. I'm going to add a little grease to the shaft to (hopefully) avoid this happening again.
Cheers again, happy boating
