Here is what is going on.
The old starter would not stay engaged to start the motor
so i bought a new starter and it works the same way!!
Any one know how to fix this?? At the boat ramp i see other Johnson and Evinrudes do the same thing and makes it hard to get the motor started..
There is something about the loopers.

If the motor is hard to start, that has to be addressed first. As you engage the starter if the motor tries to start the flywheel will spin faster than the starter and it kicks the bendix out. It's supposed to work that way.

So, we're back to making sure the motor is in good shape and your starting proceedure is correct. Make sure the carbs are clean, you have fresh 87 octane fuel and good Champion plugs. Make sure none of the flywheel magnets are loose.

Assuming all that is correct and we have good fuel delivery, try the 4 step starting system.
1- Squeeze the bulb to put pressure in the fuel lines and fill the carbs & primer line.
2- Turn the key to "On", do not engage the starter.
3- Push the key in and count to 8. This will release fuel into the intake.
4- Turn the key to "Start".

The motor should start almost instatnly. You may have to tap the primer a couple of times if the motor is fairly cold natured. You do not need to advance the throttle on 1988 and newer V4 or V6 loopers.

Rick...some times them starters with the bracket on the starter move if not tightend and **** a bit...use some loc tite on mounting bolts....just off a bit and the teeth wont engage the flywheel...
