Starter or insufficient battery?

I have a 1976 evinrude 135 hp motor on my crestliner that I recently acquired from my cousin. He had told me that the starter seemed to be drawing too many amps and required a big battery to turn it over. Does this motor just require a certain size battery or do you think the starter could be going out? When I got it we hooked up a car battery just to see if it would turn over. The starter kicked out about half way and started spinning but wouldn't kick out far enough to engage the flywheel???? Any help would be appreciated.

first check all your connections to make sure they are shiney clean and tight. the car battery should turn it over. also how far is the battery away from the engine as well as the size cable.

Re: Starter or insufficient battery?

remove plugs, turn motor over by hand, make sure it is free.

2-3 drops of light oil , like 3 n 1 oil, on the bendix shaft.
90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

Re: Starter or insufficient battery?

The Battery is maybe 3-4 feet from motor. Thanks for the great info and giving me a place to start! I'll be working on it this week and will use your advice. Glad I signed on!
