I recently jumped my starter and it cranked after 4 tries. Doeas this mean my soenoid is bad? I cleaned off all connections and ,ade sure they were tight. One note is that my starter did get pretty hot.
Also, How can I check and see if my engine is grounded or not?

you can ohm it out but there should be a cable running from the negative battery terminal to the engine. What do you mean you jumped it? you put 12 volts directly to the starters positive post ? and it took 4 tries to get it to work? If thats the case it probaby has a short or dead winding.

Here are some VOM readings.
Battery is 12.5 Volts and goes to 10.5 when I try to crank.
Solenois is 12.5 Volts but goes to 1 and almost zero when I Try to crank
My starter is at 5 Volts and stays there.

Re: Starter problem 140HP

If it starts everytime you bypass the solenoid then yes the solenoid could be bad or the cable running from the solenoid to the battery.

but.....

you said you jumped it and it took 4 tries to start. This would tell me the problem is the starter. Did the starter respond at all on the first 3 tries? ( tried to turn? turned very slow? ) or just nothing at all and it heated up real hot?

When the starter wont engage try turning it about 1/4 turn ( becareful i dont mean with power applied) then after you have turned it give it some juice and see what happens if it will start you most likely have internal problem/shortage in the starter. I had a starter on my 125 johnson that the short inside it was so bad that when i turned the ignition that the battery cable would begin to smoke!! I took it apart and it ended up being a big mess I didnt even bother to attempt to rebuild it.

btw your voltage on the solenoid that you gave was on what post that leads to where?

Re: Starter problem 140HP

the starter did try to turn but it was slow. My battery cables do get extremely hot. Does this mean the short is in the Starter. Can I get my starter checked out at a auto store? Thanks.

aztec,

Remove all the cables (both ends) and clean them thoroughly. Heat means resistance.
