1980 Mercruiser 260 In A Bayliner Eagle. Have Motor Out To Correct Mount And Alignment Issues And Some Other Maintenance. I Discovered A Automotive Starter On It So I Replaced It With A New Marine One. New Starter Would Not Turn Engine Over Even Without The Spark Plugs In It. Shimmed Starter Out And Solved Problem. Put Spark Plugs In And Again Starter Barely Turns Then Clicks. Put Old Starter Back In And No Problems. Am I Still To Tight? Do I Need To Shim It Out Some More? By The Way The Battery Is Brand New 700 Cca. Both Starters Turn Engine No Problem With The Plugs Out But As Soon As I Put Them In New Starter Wont Turn It.

Re: Starter Problem

Is the new starter motor a genuine Merc part, not aftermarket? Also, what is your engine serial number?

Chris....

Edit; 4 different starters are listed by Merc. Are you sure you got the right one?

Re: Starter Problem

Could be a bad new starter or something binding the flywheel.

The motor is back in?

And you maybe installed too long a bolts on the coupler hitting the bell housing?

The shaft not lined up right.

Out drive froze up?

What is compression on the motor.

Like i said could be a bad new starter.

What did you do to the motor?

Change out the main bearing?

The old starter it turned it over ok? After the work was finished.

You re-adjust the valves and they are to tight?

Re: Starter Problem

I have never had to shim an OEM starter. But now that I work at this place that loves the aftermarket junk, yea, you may have to shim Sierra and Mallory starters on occasion. Lots of fun on those starters that you can only get to with one hand.

I thought about it I kept thinking bad ground. Cables looked OK but I went ahead and made up a new set anyway. That was the problem! I can crank all day now and without shims.

Thanks guys

Re: Starter Problem

The sounds a starter makes can tell you what the problem is. Unfortunately, this forum has very poor sound. Glad you found the problem.
