Starter problem

I have a 1995 Evinrude 88 SPL that I hope to put in the water tomorrow, but my starter has a hesitation when I start the motor. It starts every time but it's like the battery is weak. I replaced the battery but the starter still turns slowly for about 1 or 2 seconds then it starts fine. Any ideas before I put the boat in the water.

Thanks

Re: Starter problem

Connect a voltmeter as shown. Watch the voltmeter when the engine cranks slowly. If the voltage is above 10 volts, the starter is at fault (worn brushes, open armature winding, etc). If the voltage is lower than 10 volts, its a battery, cable, solenoid or connection problem. To prevent the engine from starting when you do this test, engage the lanyard switch.... :)

Re: Starter problem

Thanks for the quick reply but I didn't have a chance to test my motor. Pardon my ignorance but where is the lanyard switch on my motor (1995 Evinrude SPL). Is it an actual switch or is it a connector.

Thanks
