I have a 97 crownline with a Volvo 5.7 GL with a (Carburetor ) basically a small block Chevy, for some reason this thing eats up starters like there?s no tomorrow , 2 in the last year, last one only lasting 2 cranks, starters grinds but will not spin the engine, I took one apart and I was extremely disappointed, plastic and alloy gears, i figure let me spend a bit more, so I when with a more expensive unit this one lasted the 2 cranks also plastic and alloy gear?s , I?ve checked the flywheel and starter alignment if the motor won?t start right away there goes the starter, multiple rebuilders have told me that these geared starters a trash if your engine won?t fire with 2 to 3 seconds you?ll kill these units, my question to the marine mechanic pro?s. Can I go with the larger old school GM starter straight shaft, and how would I match it, it?s a cross bolt pattern, any help or feedback is surely appreciated,
