This motor is going to be the death of me... Ok, went out to crank the motor: 1982 mariner 50hp.
The starter motor turns over but wont engage? tried tapping the bendix, and starter? battery is fully charged. I get one thing fixed and another goes bad. The motor has been turning over fine for about a week that I have had it. any ideas would be helpful?

Suzuki40

Re: starter problems...

No big deal. Just lube the axle and the bendix will move freely. WD-40 or similar will do the job. Just spray WD-40 on the axle and wipe it off. Then spray it one more time.

One more thing, check the battery. Even if it has been charged recently it can be going bad.

I guess it doesnt take much to push the bendix up?
So, you are suggesting that I dont need to replace the starter?

Suzuki40

I think the starter is fine.
Just try what I suggested before spending more money. :)

Re: starter problems...

Just ran into this one by Mr Schematic
"Try lubing the spline that the drive assembly rides on. (armature shaft)
Also, lift the drive upward manually, and lube the shaft from below as well....use engine oil."

Engine oil will do the job. And the correct name is armature shaft

Hi, Suzi40.

Be sure all connections of high current cables are clean and tight, special attention to the battery ground to engine block connection. Don't look, take it off and clean it.

Good luck. :)

Re: starter problems...

Oiling the bendix might help the problem...if it does not...just by a new bendix. No need to buy an entire starter.

TMD
