starter problems

hello , i have a 70 hp 3cyl merc,when i turn the starter switch all i get is a click, i pulled the starter and everything looked great ,brushes ect.,i installed the starter back on the motor and jumped from the red wire terminal on the rectifier[what i thought was the solenoid],it turned the starter like a champ ,does anyone know is this a rectifier problem or a solenoid problem?any help please/// thanks very muck:^

rectifier charges your battery. thats all it does. selenoid operates the starter. thats all IT does

And while you're in there, remove all your high current wire terminals and clean them and the terminal studs bright and shiny then reinstall nice and tight......don't forget the connections at the battery including any lead to lead connections.

You should be good to go for more enjoyable boating.

Just had the same problem... Thought it was the solenoid, but wasnt. Opened the starter up and the commutator was all corroded, put it in a lathe and cleaned her up real nice. Started right up. Good luck
