i got a 1990 gt 150 hp v-6 johnson. every once in a while when i go to start the motor, most of the time it occurs after the motor dies on me, when i go to start the engine i turn the key, and i do not know the currect turms, but at piece of the starter is suppose to go up and turn the flywheel and start the motor. but every once in a while it does not. is it time for a new starter? or is there something else wrong. Also when the starter does not engage, i just take the stand to one of the chairs and tap it a couple times and itll start right up

Re: starter problems

That is the bendix. Clean the shaft it rides up and down on and lightly oil it. You should be able to turn it up by hand and it should go very smoothly.

They must be clean and tight. Another possibility is a bad battery (regardless of age). Have it load tested at your local auto parts store.l

Re: starter problems

When it does not go up and spin the motor---does it spin but not go up, or not spin at all? If it doesn't spin at all it could be the solenoid, or the starter, or the key switch, or the wiring between the key switch and the solenoid, or the battery connections or battery cable wiring. If it spins but does not go up, do as the previous post says.

Sound like to me that the connections in the solenoid are dirty. Does it click when you try to turn it over??? If it does it is the solenoid connection and time for a new starter or I have found places that sell just the solenoid if your lucky.

when i turn the key, it spins but does not go up, we i do take a metal rod, i tap it and the part that spins will turn just a little bit, when it does that it will start right up, but i will try pulling it up tonight and oil it up

Re: starter problems

Ok well if it will spin the the bendix must not be fully engaging. Its must be hanging up somewhere. See if you can find a burr on the part where it slides on. You might be able to file it out to smooth it up some.
