im pretty sure my starter is going dead on my 1985 50hp. i went to put it in the water yesterday and it seemed like a had a weak battery. the starter, battery and battery cables got pretty hot. and the starter smoked a little bit. now im pretty sure that it is a bad connection in the wires, so im going to replace all of the cables and clean the connections. but with the starter smoking do yall think the starter needs to be replaced? what would i need to do to find out if it needs rebuilt/replaced, or if its good to go?

Re: starter problems

If it was smoking it is defective.
Good call on cleaning all connections, but before you replace all the battery cables, correct the starter and see if it works properly, unless the cables have a visual defect.

Re: starter problems

all connections battery and engine ends, plus solenoid, must be clean and tight, not finger tight. also check battery cables, for nicks, and swelling, they deteriorate from the inside out. if you have that green/aqua stuff, clean it completely.

99% poor, dirty connections, and a weak battery are your problem.

Re: starter problems

i didnt actually see the smoke from the starter a buddy of mine did. i was looking right one time when he said there was smoke but didnt see any, so i dont know how damaged the starter really is. i know that it got plenty hot thou. thats why i was going to replace the cables first. but i havent had a good chance to pull everything apart. my local shop said it would be about 60-70 bucks to rebuild. does this sound about right? and is it possible that the starter is beyond rebuildable?
