I Have a 150hp evinrude E150TRLCSR When I touch the hot wire to the starter it sparks like its grounded out somewere.and starter drags real bad tryed a second starter same issue. has new cylonoid and new key switch it was working all fine at one time now key switch not turning over now eaither I checket it with metter and Im getting power from the key switch to the cylnoid when you turn key over but nothing to the starter I hooked it all up to the manual specs
but I cant find out were it would be grounded out at. I have also checked the wiring digrams on here and the manual and everthing is hooked up correctly. could some how the hot termanal be grounded due to bad starter?

Re: Starter Problems

Well, the terminal IS grounded---sort of. There is a very low resistance between that and ground (through the brushes and armature), resulting in a high current through the starter, which is required for enough torque to crank the motor. If you just "touch" a cable to it, it will spark and burn like crazy. That's why a heavy duty switching device is required (solenoid).

Better look for why the solenoid isn't working. Does it click when you turn the key? Check the voltage across the two big terminals when you turn the key.

Thanks for responding first of all well it did click when I first put it on now all I get is voltage to it but no I Lost the click not sure why I havent changed anything it just one day I went out to turn it over and nothing. kinda weird... will check voltage in few and give results...if the brushes are bad will it ground it like just a total ground cause that what it was like that I was touching hot on a full ground
