Starter problems???

I have a 1995 Johnson 175 faststrike. When I try and start the motor it makes a horrific noise. It will start but sounds bad. And it take a couple times to start. I thought it maybe bendix sticking but I can't figure out how to get to it to oil without taking whole thing apart. Is this something for boat shop or can an average mechanic do it. It is the original starter so if I have to tear it all apart should I just replace. Thanks for help. Chris

Best thing to do if you want to do it yourself is get an OMC Factory Service Manual. Other wise take it to a shop.

Make sure the starter bolts are tight. Certainly, a starter should not make such noises.
