I recently removed a 3.0 engine from a boat and was going to do a compression check on it before installing it in another boat. My problem is that the starter will turn the engine over a few times and then nothing. I take if off and connect jumper cable to the starter and it runs fine. Install it again and get the same results, turns over couple time then nothing. I did not install a slave solenoid. Must this solenoid be installed for it to turn over continuously. How does one connect it with no other electrical connections and What is the purpose of a slave solenoid. Thks..

are the battery cable connections clean and tight? slave is not needed to turn a motor over with jumpers. only needed in a boat because the wiring it too small a gauge from the dash to the solenoid . So a slave solenoid is used because it operates on a lower current for the coil to make the higher current connection for the starters solenoid

Also make sure the battery is fully charged.
It doesn't take much power to spin the starter off the motor.

All connections were cleaned/wire brush. The hook up I used was ground cable from engine to neg post on battery and positive from battery to top terminal on solenoid and used a jumper switch from top of solenoid to the solenoid terminal next to the engine block.

The way your doing it should work without issue. My guess is there is something wrong with the starter, probably the solenoid. The slave solenoid does not need to be used to turn the motor over
