starter question

the starter on my 40 hp merc (1986 I think) is shot. I have called around local and they just laugh at me. I can;t even find a rebuild kit. I was told the part is only found out of the country..possibly a yamaha part and it is over 300.00 ! Is it not possible to rebuild? Any suggestions on a better place to buy? <br /><br />Thanks for all your help.

Why can't it be rebuilt? Have you checked with your local auto electric shops?

I had my 86 Merc starter rebuilt 2 years ago by a local starter shop for about $75 I think.

Does your starter look like this starter <br />Post the model number and or serial number for your motor. You probably only need new brushes which are around 20 bucks.

My boat is at a friend. Will pick it up tomorrow and pull the started again for info. That drawing kinda looks like what I remember.
