I have an OMC 800 Sterndrive with a 350 Chevy engine. I need to replace my strater but can't figure out where the mounting bolts are. Does anyone have ideas? My manual doesn't help at all.

Also, once I get it out, how do I find out what to replace it with? Right now it's a Bosch SR516X Reman.

Thanks

Re: Starter questions

Make sure your drive is trimmed all the way down(which actually brings the motor all the way up on it's mounts)If it has trim. The bolts that hold the starter in come from the bottom and bolt vertically into the engine block. You won't be able to see them you're going to have to go by braille. There are two different pattern types 1. the bolts are in a line with each other and one is shorter than the other. 2.The bolts are offset from each other and are the same length. Do some research if your starter is big, as there are now some gear reduction(peanut starters)now available that are alot easier to install and remove the next time. Good Luck :D

Re: Starter questions

Thanks for the info. Would I need a standard rotation or reverse rotation starter? If my manual is correct, I have a counter clockwise engine rotation (from the drive side).

Re: Starter questions

Hey SS, why not have your starter rebuilt. Northwest Starter Exchange up in Salmon Creek could take care of that. Your Bosch Starter may be an automotive starter. If it is you should toss it. A new marine starter would probably run you $100 plus. Ditto on the gear reduction starter. They are a lot smaller and easier to put on or remove. I think they cost about $120 to $150. You can also check on:

Ebay

Ebay

Boomyal,
Hi neighbor! It wouldn't surprise me a bit if it is an auto starter, based on my short history with this boat. I'll keep that shop in mind.
