starter rebuild problem

I am rebuilding a Prestolite MGL-4109 starter off of a 1979 115hp. Two of the four brushes were attached directly to the field windings with a spot weld rather than solder. There was a metal sleeve around these old wires that is crimped to the end of the brush wire and then spot welded to the tab on the field windings. The new brushes do not have the metal sleeve nor can I spot weld anything. I took it to the local expert and he said just solder it. So, I have ground the wire off the tab and just soldered the wire to it but now I'm not too sure it will hold. What is the right way to do this?

Re: starter rebuild problem

If you did a proper job of soldering it will work fine. That's the way the rebuilder would likely do it as well.
