I swapped out a 50 Merc for a 50 Force. Used a cross wiring reference chart to hook up the ignition switch and other wires. Now the engine will not start with the key. I took the starter relay off and tested it, and it clicked. I put it back on and placed DVOM leads to the different posts while turning on the key. I never got voltage from the red wire to the starter, the black to the ground or the yellow to the switch. All I got was batt volt from the batt supply. There was also no click in the relay during testing on the boat. Is the starter relay bad or is it a bad switch. The motor will start if I jump the batt supply terminal to the yellow switch post.

Re: Starter relay test 50 hp Force

The yellow wire should go to a neutral interlock switch on the powerhead. If it is working a switch should engage when you select neutral and then the starter should work. If not you may need to clean all the wires and contacts going to the starter. That thing sucks a lot of power and if you dont have good connections you are loosing too much power to contact resistance.
