1986 15 HP Rude. tried to replace cord without taking rewind unit off. block of wood slipped out in process. i was able to rewind spring by hand, but still have about twenty inches of rope left. any ideas on how to tighten spring further withut taking unit off engine? i thought this would be easy fix until spring released and skeeters started to attack ( live in WI).

Re: starter rewind problems

With the pull handle removed you can feed the rope through the recoil for several more wraps. You have to be careful you never let go of the rope during the process. This will tighten the spring as necessary for the rope to fully retract. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: starter rewind problems

thanks for the response. what I ended up doing was pulling rope out further, blocking pulley with block of wood and then wrapping cord to take up excess rope. the pulley set up is pretty tight on this engine, so wrapping cord was not super easy.
