Well thanks to Don.s, and Rod bolt and others for all the great advice with the ring gear and starter problems I was having. I decided not to listen to the two local shops, 1 non local shop and the mechanic who had previously worked on my boat and try to get the ring gear off (They all said it CAN NOT be removed and I needed a new fly wheel for 700$ and a 3 week wait).

I am sorry to Don S if it sounded didn't I didn't believe you but it's hard to believe what you read Internet an internet message board is right and that 4 people who work on boats for a living are wrong. But they were, you guys nailed it on the nose!

I took my time pulled the motor, and pulled off the fly wheel.... guess what, the ring gear came off with a chisel, and Napa had a new one 3 hours later for $25! I put in a new starter to be safe so the repair was $200. The mech who was going to do it was going to cost me over $1100! We have taken the boat out twice now and quietly starts perfectly and quitely now, music to my ears.

Thank you guys so much for all the help and advice. Your advice is very valuable to folks like me and you managed to save me big $$$! To others on this board, listen to the advice these guys give, they KNOW what Speed5 talking about. Speed5, did you get you starter fixed yet?

I freaking tole ya, just like DonS did.

all us mocanics ait out to rip ya off.
it costs what it costs.
however if I can save us both time and bucks and still have a first quality repair I do.
I will not do a substandard repair.
difference between techs is those that dig and hunt and those that only have school book lernins.
I have done this gig almost 30 years.

Good news. It's a great feeling to tackle the unknown and come out victorious. You learned more than your $200 repair tab about your boat.
