Starter Rope needed

Hi again, Dave here with the 1947 5 hp sea king.

I need a new starter rope as the cotton casing around mine has deteriorated and can't be repaired, or at least not by me. this rope has a cable inside a red cotton wrap and at the end of the cable is a hooked piece that fits in a slot inside the pulley.

Any info on where one of these may be purchased would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Dave

Most people replace them with hard braid nylon rope. Tie a knot in the end. But a warning..if you yank it all the way to the end, it will cut the knot off and probably wreck the spring.

Exactly----so cram on as much rope as the pulley will comfortably hold and still retract. It's been a while since I did one but I seem to recall using a small grinding stone in a Dremel tool to knock off the sharpest edges of the hole the rope is secured thru to reduce the tendency to cut off the knot. So when you have it apart examine it closely to see if it's possible to do so in case I have it confused with a different starter.

On newer models with similar starters that use rope, there is a pin that the rope goes behind, keeping you from pulling it to the knot. I add such a pin to the old ones that I convert to rope. Problem solved.

Thanks, I did this with some braided nylon, actually took a think washer, ground one side down to fit the inside curve and ran the rope through the washer and knotted it so there was no chance it could pull through. Seems to be holding now. I appreciate the advice.
