Hi, I have a 1999 350 Merc mpi and it seems the starter could have been replaced with some generic rebuild. It is not coated in the black paint...it is shiny and gold :) Not real gold.

Anyway, it seems the solinoid is gone and so is the 90 amp fuse that is attached to the solinoid. The solinoid makes the clicking sound.

Question, is the original marine starter capable of more cranking compared to this rebuilt automotive starter? It must be having trouble cranking hense drawing more power causing the fuse to blow and mess up the solinoid.

Thx

Does anyone have specs to a mecury starter and solinoid?

Re: Starter / solinoid & Fuse

you need to replace it with a marine starter. The specs may be the same but the electronics in an automotive starter are not shielded and can cause sparks and in an enclosed environment with gas fumes an explosion.

All electronics on a marine engine are explosion proof, automotive ones are not.

For your safety just buy the right part and replace it. Then start checking for other issues.
