Yikes, my starter now spins but does not pop up to engage the flywheel of my 1975 Stinger 75 horse Johnson (I'm a brand new member and more questions will likely be coming). Thanks.
Drop you a few drops of some light weight oil on the pinion shaft where the bendix works up and down the shaft.
Take your fingers and roll the gear wheel (bendix) on the starter shaft up the shaft and oil under it.
If that doesn't work, then check the condition of your battery and clean battery posts, battery cables at both ends, and the engine block where the ground attaches.
I had the same problems recently. If the other suggestions dont work try pulling the starter apart and checking the brushes and the condition of the rotor. You can lightly sand the rotor with sand paper to clean it. (caution ) DONT use any kind of wire pad or wire brush. This fixed mine.
Hooked
