Starter spins wrong way Johnson GT 150 1987

When I try to crank the engine the starter just spins ,notice its spinning the wrong way.when I turn it by hand the right way it will engage
Anyone know whats wrong?

did he say it ran? i would make sure the battery is fully charged and spray a little wd-40 on the starter shaft and try again.

are the battery terminals on the right posts of the battery?

Starter motors are series wound. They will not reverse direction just by reversing the applied voltage.

You can reverse the direction of a series wound motor by reversing the brushes.
I know of no other way to make that happen.

Sorry, clockwise doesn't register with me as right or wrong. Either you are mistaken or somebody screwed up (fixable) your starter.
