OK, before you read this, I must state that "I am not smarter than a 5th grader".

99 130 Johnson,
I had my starter off to put a new drive gear on, so I figured why not clean out the magnet dust and clean up the brushes and rotor copper. Everything went well, the starter is back on the boat and it starts fine. No, this is not the happy ending I was hoping for. Much to my horror, while cleaning up my work bench, I discovered a strange spring that looked just like one of the four brush springs (that I was so careful with when reinstalling).

So the reason for my post. "Is there anyway of running an ohm meter check (or some other way) to see if one of the brushes is missing a spring? Maybe I could get the x-ray guy at the hospital to pop a shot on it. What damage could I do by running it without a brush spring?

Thanks in advance for any responses

I agree, take it apart........it gets easier to reassemble each time you do it. Don't ask me how I know. ;)

Well, I agreed with the advice and took it all apart again. All 4 springs were found inside. I took a sledge hammer to the mystery spring.
