Re: Starter through bolts.
Hello jch7450, Good advice.
When I first requested help getting the broken
through bolt part number. It was because I had
noticed the through bolt broken at the rear bracket
to the motor. So I thought I would just replace
it. The following day I had a little time on my
hands and it was a really Warm day, I decided to
puts with the motor and did a compression test
on the cylinders. When I had all the plugs out
and was turning the motor over to do the test I
noticed the engine laboring to turn with no
compression. So I had a closer look at the starter
and when I checked the starter bolts for tightness
the inside bolt was loose and would not tighten.
I backed it out and found the bolt broken at the
start of the threads. Fortunately I was able to get
the remainder of the bolt out because it was visible
through the top of bolt hole along the back of the
block. Boy was I relieved.
If it would of been the far outside bolt their
could have been a real problem removing the broken
remains. I likely would of needed to remove the motor
and turn it over to get at the bolt.
I do wounder why it broke? Perhaps it had been
previously over tightened and snapped. Or maybe
their is some other reason you might know.
