I am having trouble with a new starter i just installed on an '88 50HP force. When I turn the key to start, nothing happens...no click or anything...I can push to choke and the choke solenoid works fine. So i know there is some power going to the motor from the ignition. I have the red POS cable hooked to the starter and It is grounded through the mounting bracket, correct? Next, as a test, I gave the starter power DIRECTLY from the positive battery terminal and grounded the Neg from the battery to the ignition coil bolt. (bypassing the keyed ignition) The starter turned. Does this sound like something is wrong with my ignition? The push to choke worked. Or, am I not grounding the starter properly? What am I missing? Please help! Thank you in Advance for any insight into my frustrating problem.

first off what kind of motor, check your neutral safety switch, it should be located on the fuel pump side of the motor it usually has two yellow wires going to it, try jumping the two together and give that a try
