Starter turning slow

I just bought a use evinrude 175 hp 1986 because i blew my other motor and i had to use the starter off the blown engine. If i connect 2 batteries it turns fast but if i use the one battery i know is good and charged it turns slow. I also know the timming is off a bit bc if i move a piece im not sure what its called it will spin faster and backfire. its a piece underthe flywheel that has a small rod connected to the throttle. So my question is, if the timming is off will that not let it turn over fast enough?

Re: Starter turning slow

That leaves a few questions. Do you line up the 2 batteries parallel or in a series?
We can possibly answer the other questions if you post a few pictures so we know precisely what you are talking about.

Yep, battery thing sounds scarey !!!! Could be a multitude of things. Start with the simple. Connections tight clean and shiny, cables in good shape and not rotting from within and a good ground to name but a few.
Photos will sure help everyone.

yes, if it is firing too soon the starter will have to fight combustion

Re: Starter turning slow

I though it might. So I need to get the timing right?

Before you get into the timing thing, disconnect the plug wires and ground them. Then try spinning it over and see what it does. If it's slow then troubleshoot the starting system.

Agree, clean all the heavy red/black cable connections. You need to have the engine's timer base in the idle position, perhaps 4-6 degrees of timing. If the timer base is advanced, it will struggle to turn the engine over. If you jump the starter direct (with automotive jumper cables) from a known good battery and it turns the engine over rapidly, you know the starter is ok. If the contacts inside the starter solenoid get burned (with age and use) it won't transfer enough current to the starter to crank at normal rpm's.

Re: Starter turning slow

I will def try all of that but how do i know when its in the 4-6 degree of timing? and I did get it running today by connecting 2 batteries together and ran 24 volts to the starter while moving the timer base back and forth till it started up. The starter turned really fast then. lol But i tried it again with one battery and the timer in the same position and still nothing.

When you say known good battery do you know for certain that the MCA (marine cranking amps) meet the needs of your engine? ie. are you using a good 80 MCA battery when you engine is rated and needs 100 MCA?

I dont know what mine needs but it says on the battery 730 marine cranking amps. and i know its a good battery bc i just bought it 6 months ago and keep it on a battery tender.

Re: Starter turning slow

I believe the battery is good. But if your engine needs 900 MCA to start properly then it would turnover slower than it should. I had 850 MCA batteries and my engines would start slow on one battery, fine on 2 just like yours. I found out I needed 1000 MCA. when I put in the 1000 MCA what a difference. It may not be the MCA's in your case as 750 sounds reasonable for you size engine but just something you might want to check with your dealer to rule it out.

Just to be sure, you might want to take the batteries and have them load tested. I think most places that sell batteries will be able to test them free.

OK so what has actually been tried yet ??? Is there any of the suggestions so far ruled out now ??
The only way to "know" it is a good battery is top have it tested.

Re: Starter turning slow

Sorry everyone, I had a busy weekend and couldn't get on. But so far I had the starter tested and that is bad so I got a new one. I also believe my rectifier is bad because when it did run, it got hot real fast and the water coming out the pee hole was steaming. But I also believe it is drawing too many amps and not allowing the starter to get the power it need unless I double up on the battery. Does any of this sound right?
