I have a Mercruiser 233 with the Ford 351. Sometimes when I start the engine the starter will not disengage after it starts even if I turn the key back to the off position the engine is still running. It will stop after I disconnect the battery cable. I have replaced the solenoid three times, but it seems to do the same thing after a few trips out.I thought maybe it was the ignition switch, but that did not fix the problem.Any ideas?

You only replaced the solenoid and not the whole starter? I've always replaced the whole starter including the solenoid.

You need to pull the starter and thoroughly clean the bendix gear. That is the part that engages the flywheel. It is sticking.

i have the same problem i replace the selenoid and still have the problem then i find out they have a second selenoid like the ford and wend you kill the switch the other selenoid still engage look for the second selenoid and eliminate and run the wire that come from the switch to the selenoid straigth to the selenoid in the starter i do that and i don't have any problems in my case. <br />good look
