Power getting to starter but doesn't always engage. Can I replace solinoid or do I need new starter?

On what engine ??

Some general advice...
  • Try a newly charged and known good battery.
  • Clean ALL connections between battery and starter.
  • Unscrew the nut on top of the starter, remove the benedix gear... clean all part... use some lightweight oil on the "tread" when assembling .

It is a 1989 mariner magnum 40hp. Thanks for the advice Droll. I will try removing the bendix gear etc... all conections are clean and tight and the battery is also charged and in good shape. Back to my original question. Could it be the solinoid?

Rooster,
I just went through the same problem. My solenoid would just click but the starter wouldn't engage, sounds like the bendix needs a little grease/oil. Is the starter turning but the bendix won't engage? Just my thoughts.

Yes the starter is turning. I will try greasing the shaft, probably won't get to it for a couple of days. I will post my results. Thanks to all for your advice.

Re: Starter wont engage

Alright ya'll, just cleaned her up with some brake cleaner and and lubed her up with W-D 40 and she fired right up. I definatly learned some good stuff looking around this website. Still can't find a serial #. Here is a possible one. Can anyone tell me if this # is anything?

321735 there is possibly a J and a 1 below this number with some kind of logo between them. This is on a plate that is bolted with the upper transom mount bolt and there is one on each side. I would really appriciate some help. Thanks again for the advice on the starter.

Re: Starter wont engage

W-D stands for water displacement and the 40 is the 40th formula they tried. It won't stay on the starter very long. Should have used grease.

Re: Starter wont engage

By light oil do you mean something like 3 in 1 oil? Oh yeah, what do you think about those numbers? I think I have a 1989 but would feel more comfortable knowing for sure if anyone can help.
