Im not a motor guy or anything but been rebuilding a boat with a 25 hp mercury motor and have just got everything done on motor such as carberator and exc. once i tried to start it up for the first time my brushes inside starter melted so replaced starter. Just installed knew starter and once i turn over key the starter teeth catch the flywheel and will not turn it from there. Not sure what the probleme can be and dont want to burn up knew starer. My flywheen turns by hand so i know it should be turning with no problem. Any ideas or information can help thanks. DON

sounds like the starter is no good or you aren't getting enough juice to it

Yeah i just put knew starter on today and charged battery for a hour so has plenty of juice to it. putting out 12 volts when trying to start.

have you ever had the motor turning over since you got it? have you checked compression? could be a broken ring

If you have a deep cycle battery, an hour is nowhere near enough time to fully charge it.

Can't tell you how many times on here starter issues turn out to be battery issues. I would take the battery out and take it to an automotive store and have it tested. Compared to just about everything else on a boat, batteries are cheap.

Oh, and voltage at start has nothing to do with the issue, you need to know amperage being put out at start.

Check the battery, if you don't know how, then bring it to a garage, where they can load test it.
Second, clean off the battery cable terminals, (baking soda and water mix)use a terminal cleaner on them as well.
Check the connections on the solinoid, make sure their tight.
Check the starter to make sure its grounded correctly.
IF the starter is new, then its either the wires, connections, soliniod or battery.

ok thanks for all your input i really appriciate it. my silinoid wire does seem to be connected bad so going to try that and see if it helps. My compression seems to be good and had it running when i first got it just to make sure i was not wasting my time. it was a all knew rebuilt carberator, fuel lines, all knew batteries, plugs, primmer, and starter. seems to be when i try to start it the starter is actually running up on the teeth to high and up to it hits the flywheel. looked on starter and i dont see a adjustment or anything to keep it from running up so far. should only go up enough to catch the teeth and thats all. any segestions. i double checked and is the right starter. any ideas would be helpfull thanks again for any imput;-)
