starter ?

i have a 2001 mercury efi 250. i am having problems starting it up for the spring. starter just spings. batteries are fully charged. my starter spins but seems to be spining in the wrong direction. teeth are on a worm gear that spins up an engages when spinning one way but my starter is turning the other way. any ideas?

Sounds like your battery wires are on backwards. Since you said your starter is spinning but in the wrong direction, causing the Bendix (small set of teeth on the starter) to spin in the wrong direction. also check the connections on the starter itself, make sure it is not crossed there. Did you do any work to the motor since the last time you ran it?
