well my mechanic says replace starter.. see other post.* anyway he is on so called vacation and wants $75/hr for labor and says 3hrs min. + cost to rebuild.?? wtf? 88 v8 omc... tough to get at!
yea im tempted.. but limited time.. and so is the time on the water. SUmmer is almost gone. I hate to spend money on things that i know i could do. EVEN though the mechanic say " im gonna check your entire starting system>"" whats that consist of.. bad wires $$$$ bad selenoid??$$$ what else can he get out of me is how i feel.?? Ive got a freind who will do for half the labor and is a pretty good wrench, but this marine mechanic has already been doing all of my work and kinda stands behind it. Plus hes sorta a friend of the family.
Im up in Algonac on the river about a quarter mile from the old Chris Craft plant.I don't usualy get that far south (with boat).Do have family in the shores though.
I dont know where the starter is located on your OMC, but when i did my starter on my mercruiser (the 2nd day i owned it) it cost me $100 for a NEW starter (Dont get a rebuilt or remanufactured one, also get a marine starter, not a automobile) and then $100/hr labor for 2hrs. so the whole shabang cost me $300.

I sat on the boat watching the marine tech do this job, and i suddenly realized im glad i didnt attempt to do it by myself. I would have blown myself up.
I'm with Bondo. Only two bolts hold it in, and a couple wire connections. This one a'int brain surgery, $75.00 an hour isn't a bad price, but if you want it done now, do it yourself. Your mechanic/friend shouldn't get mad because you didn't take it to someone else, you did *** yourself. 'Git 'er done'! Make sure you disconnect the battery!!.....JK
Faster to do it yourself. I have an 88 SBC just like yours. The toughest bolts to get to are the small electrical connections on the solenoid. It took me about a hour and a half or two. Not too difficult.
its done and im goin to check it out today... and see what he did and run it for a bit. It took him 1hr... cuz i have call id on my cell and when he got there it was 9:30 and called me and when he finisihed he called it was 10:35 He does live about 35 min from my marina. But still.. how much should i have to pay for his drive time>? yesterday his estimate was $380 for immediate service.. if i wait until next week wed. Maybe would do it for $50 less.. what .. thats what i say.. OH immediate service = $$$$ whatever... it runs now
I just replaced the starter on my Merc 5.0 and I'll tell you what it was no easy task, about two hours to remove and an hour to install. I figure if I am machanical enough to work on a car I can work on a boat.
of course immediate service means exta money. The guy is busy and you want him to drop everything just to work on your boat. You aren't God and I wouldn't drop everything just to work on your boat either unless you were paying extra money.
Anybody can work on them, the problem is fixing them.
The trick is knowing the difference between automotive and marine parts, and where it makes a difference.
