Happy New Year to all!
I've just had the most enjoyable time removing the starter from my I/O.
The pinion gear was not kicking out but the starter spun. I noticed that there was some surface rust on the gear, and the ring gear felt a little "wet". The starter had acted up a couple of times this summer after the boat sat for awhile but once started would work fine.
I had pulled the outdrive last winter to check the alignment and there was no water in the bellows and everything was OK. Used the boat till Nov 07 and no water was leaking into the bilge from the coupler area.
Is it possible that over time (in this case 8 years) condensation can repeatedly form in this area and cause the drive to stick or should I yank the OD again and check the bellows to be on the safe side?
The boat is kept on a trailer.

I normally buy all my VP service parts from Marine Parts Express, but $308.00 for a #3860566 starter (VP OEM )?????.

This place is about half the price and is a NEW Delco. http://www.psepmarineparts.biz/store/volvo_penta_starter_motors.htm
There are a couple of other sites also that are in the same price range.
Is there a difference between VP's pricey starter and the others?
Thanks....

There should be no water in the bell housing. crack the bell housing plate at the bottom and see if any water comes out. Did the bilge ever fill with water for any reason? If there is water in the bell housing, you will need to find and repair the source.

Any new MARINE starter will be fine, you don't need to buy from VP, The VP starter is just a re-boxed delco marine starter.

try google-ing for a starter/alternator shop in your area... can probably have yours rebuilt for less than 100 bucks.

you can pull the starter apart yourself, it is very easy.
the reason the pinion gear doesn't kick out is because the solenoid on the starter is bad. The starter/alt. industry today is setup so that you cannot buy starter parts easily, they want you to turn the whole unit in and buy a whole new/reman one for $100+ while they fix yours for $10.
You can try looking on the net for the solenoid, they are the same across all PMGR starters, but are not easy to find and most will lie to you and say it is not a customer serviceable part.

the solenoid you need to replace is #17 in the pdf.

merry christmas, $20

I had starter problems on mine couple years ago.
Be aware that this type of solenoid requires a lot of power, that's why there's a second solenoid, called a slave solenoid, near the starter. I recommend you spend another $20 and replace that also. If the slave solenoid is not working, it can kill the solenoid on the starter. That is what happened to me, replaced the starter and not the slave solenoid, within 10 starts the new starter wasn't working anymore- would just click or the pinion would not extend fully and grind on the flywheel. After replacing the slave solenoid, have been good since. There's a good chance the slave solenoid is what killed the starter solenoid on your too.
I got my slave solenoid from go2marine.com. You can probably ebay that also.

The starter solanoid id the same as an automotive one. Check you local auto parts store that services mechanics. They should have one. it's a relatively easy job to replace it. Any marine or automotive manual will show you how. Good luck, but find the source of that water. It should not be there. Something is leeking somewhere and getting sprayed onto your starter. If you don't find it and fix it, yoy'll be doing the whole job over again. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Last winter I got an MES starter (new not rebuilt) from a local marine parts place for about 150 and it works fine, you need to see if you have a leak from the exhaust manifold because if it leaks where the drain plug is it can run right on the starter. Isn't there a core plug somewhere on the rear of the engine block, could that be leaking?
