Why are the starters available from Ebay stores about 1/3 the price of marine dealers including online dealers? Should I avoid them?

Re: Starters on Ebay

I got a great starter for my Force 125 for $10 on e-bay and it worked great
I've also bought things that didn't work at all
Check to see if the seller offers a money back guarantee and if his rating is good If it is, chances are he's reputable and go for it,
If not it's a crap shoot
Most of the stuff on e-bay is stuff people just no longer have a use for and are looking to unload it at any price

I have a feeling these one are rebuilds. One year warranty and really good feedback.

EBay can be a great resource but you have to be careful. Good feedback is a plus but you have to look at the recency of ratings too. I have seen very high volume sellers with high ratings, because the number of negatives is low in relationship to the overall activity, but when you look at recent feedback, there are quite a few bad marks. Often times this happens when the seller's business has grown to a point where he/she is having trouble keeping up with it all. I think these situations are just a matter of getting overwhelmed and sloppy.

If the parts that are being advertized appear to be new or rebuilt, I would do some checking on the business in places other than EBay. For example, a business that is doing a high volume off such items is probably an "inc" or "llc," and as such, should be registered with the Secretary of State in whatever the home state is. It might also be a BBB member. The point I am trying to make, is to check them out to be sure that things like warranties will really be honored.

All of this said, I'm with Benny - I tend to buy new parts from recognised sources, and when I buy used parts, I don't pay much and just assume that having them rebuilt is a possibility. Like Benny, also, I've been very happy with local rebuild shops for things like starters.

Re: Starters on Ebay

Thanks for the input guys. I tried to get my own rebuilt but the armature is gone and the starter is so old that they can't get a replacement. I went to 3 different shops. I think I will take a shot on the one I found on EBbay. I would say they are definately rebuilds because the guy has 10 of them.
