Hey, thanks for the tips and quick responces. I now know that I have a 1988 Bayliner Capri 2150. Okay, a few more quick questions. I pulled the starter and it is bad, can I use the standard GM305 starter or is there a reason that the OMC one is $120.00 more. Also I have been told that there is a difference between auto and Marine spark plugs but the guy at the auto parts store gave me what looks like regular auto ones? Is this correct? One more thing. I removed all of the upholstery and carpet because it was thrashed, any sites where to get new stuff, especially carpet. The upholstery I can get done locally unless there is someone that is excellent that you know of. Thanks again for being so nice to a beginner.

Re: Starters

Hey Kep..Welcome to iboats.DO NOT use auto starter on your boat!!!!!It is a very serious safety issue. The short reason for this-fuel vapors are heavier than air, and collect in your bilge around your engine. Any spark from a starter, alternator, bilge pump etc could cause an explosion. You must use a marine starter, its the law for a good reason. Auto plugs are allright to use.

Jim

Hey thanks Jim! I didnt know that it is the law, or that it might explode and that IS a GOOD reason. I will let the guy at the parts store know as well. Thanks.

Kep, keep asking questions on here, you will learn a-lot, I did. The above posts are very much correct about the starter. Just so you know, the key components that cannot be crossed over to the auto world are: Starter, alternator, fuel pump, carburator, distributor, just about any solenoid or relay, and items such as trim pumps. This is not a complete list, just some of the common items that people usually go to an auto parts store for.....don't do it !! In a case like a starter, you can take it to a rebuilder, or a shop that sells rebuilt marine starters, it will save you some money.
