I was just given a 1966 lone star cruiseliner that the title shows has a 1969 vintage chrysler 105hp outboard.
the boat had been stored indoors from 1991-2005 after the owner passed away, and his son let it sit outside uncovered from 2005-yesterday. i brought it home yesterday afternoon and scrubbed most of the outside and started digging in. the boat will be stored outdoors at my house, but i will get a cover for the boat and the motor.
after about 10 minutes i figured out how to get the cover off the engine. everything looks excellent, all wiring is intact and the insulation on the wires looks good and is not brittle. the fuel tanks were drained prior to storage and the glass bowl on the fuel supply has a little gunk in the bottom. carbs look clean, linkages all work properly. i will replace the fuel lines from tank to engine, they are shot.
i am not a boat guy - i am a car guy, but an engine is an engine. i hooked up a battery and spun it just enough to verify starter works and that i have strong spark at the plugs.
on my to do list prior to startup is to drain and refill engine oil, drain and refill the oil on the drive/prop case(not sure of the technical term), replace fuel lines, clean the glass bowl, and install inline filters on the lines from each tank to catch any crap from the tanks sitting dry.
what else would you do? are there manuals online with factory recommended oil weights, locations to drain and fill plugs, and any other specs i need to know like timing or carb settings?
my father in law is a boater, has been his whole life, so he made sure i know not to run the engine out of the water and suggested putting it into a trash can full of water.
thanks in advance for your help. it's going to be a big project to restore but between my hobby of car building and my skills as a finish carpenter i believe i can take care of what appears to be a mostly cosmetic restoration. #1 though is make it run and float without leaking.
