starting a 1969 105hp sitting since 1991

I was just given a 1966 lone star cruiseliner that the title shows has a 1969 vintage chrysler 105hp outboard.

the boat had been stored indoors from 1991-2005 after the owner passed away, and his son let it sit outside uncovered from 2005-yesterday. i brought it home yesterday afternoon and scrubbed most of the outside and started digging in. the boat will be stored outdoors at my house, but i will get a cover for the boat and the motor.

after about 10 minutes i figured out how to get the cover off the engine. everything looks excellent, all wiring is intact and the insulation on the wires looks good and is not brittle. the fuel tanks were drained prior to storage and the glass bowl on the fuel supply has a little gunk in the bottom. carbs look clean, linkages all work properly. i will replace the fuel lines from tank to engine, they are shot.

i am not a boat guy - i am a car guy, but an engine is an engine. i hooked up a battery and spun it just enough to verify starter works and that i have strong spark at the plugs.

on my to do list prior to startup is to drain and refill engine oil, drain and refill the oil on the drive/prop case(not sure of the technical term), replace fuel lines, clean the glass bowl, and install inline filters on the lines from each tank to catch any crap from the tanks sitting dry.

what else would you do? are there manuals online with factory recommended oil weights, locations to drain and fill plugs, and any other specs i need to know like timing or carb settings?

my father in law is a boater, has been his whole life, so he made sure i know not to run the engine out of the water and suggested putting it into a trash can full of water.

thanks in advance for your help. it's going to be a big project to restore but between my hobby of car building and my skills as a finish carpenter i believe i can take care of what appears to be a mostly cosmetic restoration. #1 though is make it run and float without leaking.

Ditto,EZ!! Patgizz i believe that motor is a 2 stroke it will not have engine oil.The oil is mixed with the gas to lube the intrenals of the motor, the bottom of the motor is called a lower unit and it does contain oil to lube the gears, are we being tested???

you guys are correct it is a 2 stroke. i assumed there would be some crankcase oil like my 2 stroke bike to change - i am 100% new to boats and outboards. i got the big ohio boating and waterways rule book to make sure i am educated on the hows and rules of boating.

the lower unit - i found the drain and fill/level check plugs. maybe i am looking in the wrong places but the internet is giving me little to no help with the old chrysler outboard or lonestar boats in general.

Sounds like a sweet rig, love to see some pix! Check out Chrysler Crew website. (Google it, it'll come up) and also Allpar website. There are quite a few Chrysler gurus here onboard (pardon the pun). If you have a question about a Chrysler outboard and someone here on this board doesn't know the answer, well then you may as well realize that the answer just ain't meant to be knowed!! This is a KNOLWEDGEABLE group. Good luck...

i'll snap pics tomorrow. today i cut off the fuel line since it will be replaced anyway, stuck it in my gas can with the proper mix, primed the motor, and the thing fired right up. didnt run it more than 10 seconds, just to make sure it sounded OK. also pressure washed the outside of all the algae, lichens, black crap, and pine needles. took off most of the paint from the horizontal surfaces. all the lights work except the spotlight on the roof. since i verified it runs now i can run new fuel lines and filters and start inspecting the seams to make sure things are watertight, then on to lots and lots of cleaning.

All sounds good except for draining engine oil. There is no oil to drain. the oil burns off with the gas. Do like Jerry said in a different post...tilt the engine up...remove spark plugs and add a cap full of two stroke oil in the plug holes and rotate the flywheel clockwise by hand a bunch of times and you MUST change the water impeller. I'm sure it'll shred into pieces as soon as you start it.

Re: starting a 1969 105hp sitting since 1991

the engine # is 10575 and the serial verifies 1969 year 105hp.

which impeller is correct?

one source(master tech marine) calls for #3085, a 5 year old post i found here while searching calls for 3065, and a third source(mercruiserparts dot com) says F438065

i'd like to get the impeller and gaskets ordered but not sure who to believe.

While i don't know the numbers, the original impeller was a 12 vane 3/4 inch high impeller. This is almost not avaiklable but some turn up occasionally.

Newer models are a 6 vane impeller which is more efficient.

Do not use the newest model which is 6 vane but 1 inch high.

Try franzmarine@aol.com. He will give you the correct impeller.
