my neighbor just gave me his old outboard. The throttle handle has a piece of sheetmetal that says start stop shift on it, but came loose from its original position.

how do I start this motor? is there a kill switch? my neighbor is very old and has no idea how the motor runs (his kids used to move it) but they are grown and moved away.

he says it hasnt ran in a few years, I already disconnected the glass bowl and cleaned the crud out of it

Are you sure it's a 1973? A 1973 doesn't have a glass bowl. But if it was full of crud, one would assume the rest of the fuel system is also.

There is a thread here somewhere on awakening a sleeping outboard. I'm sure somebody will come along soon with the details.
