I have heard several times that you "NEED" to have the motor totally vertical or even tucked under to be able to start them. That is not true. I start mine all the time during the off season on the trailer. I can't even get my motor vertical while on the trailer cause the boat sits too low. I also don't really want to take the time or hastle to unhook it from the transom saver.

From a total COLD start (Being about 1-2 weeks between starts) it takes no longer than 15 - 20 seconds at the most cranking to fire it up. In the picture the motor is running and still hooked up to the Transom Saver.

http://www.myfishingpictures.com/showphoto.php?photo=13005

I'm posting this so that others don't get it in their heads that the motor "Has" to be in a certain position in order to start it. The carbs take fuel from the bottom of the bowl, so, basically as long as the water intakes are under water you should be able to start it without taking any longer than if it was vertical.

I hope this helps.

Craig

Does yours have the choke flappers or the "enricher valve" setup?

-W

Looks like a '78 to me.. Most likely has electric choke and butterfies..

I could never get my 150hp inline 6 to start unless it was vertical...and even then it was a b**ch to get going. I plan on making a new primer system this year as somebody on this board posted about a while ago, that squirts gas into the carb throat.

OK, Let's say it "ought" to be vertical to help give you a head start. :)

Yes, proper priming, choking, and throttle position are the key to it all.

(providing everything is set up correctly)

-W

Re: Starting a Mercury 140hp

Ive got an older '78 inline 6 115. mine has a mercury switch so the engine cannot be started in the up position (Ive disconnected mine for the time being, but anybody who has one of these is gonna be out of luck trying to start it raised.).

Mine also has the Mercury Switch on it and it is connected and working. but in the position shown in the photo, it will start and just as easy as it does vertical.

Craig
