Hi there,

Ive got a 1991 mercury 40hp 4 cylinder oil injected outboard. The engine stars fine from cold normally about second go then will run fine. The problem lies when I switch it off say for 5 minutes and go to start it its very hard to start again and only normally starts with the enricher pressed on the key. Does anyone know why this is?
Cheers

Re: Starting after switching off

Try running a couple of tanks of Sea Foam at 2x the recommended amount on the can (2 oz per gallon of gas). You may have a little varnish in the carb internal ports. Having to use the enricher says that you aren't getting adequate fuel availability in the carb to light it off again. Once you run and get somewhat warmed up, for short periods of rest restarts, it ought to light off in N, no fast idle, no enrichment, faster than you can get your fingers off the key....unless it has been sitting for awhile, like when you stop off to fish a point or something like that. If that doesn't do it pull the carbs and clean em up.
