How many A/hr for a STARTING battery bank? Are there guidelines for a battery size to the starter’s amp pull ratio? Engine is a cat 3208 – 24v. A pair of 8D’s was recommended by boat yard. I called cat and they said a pair of 4D’s is common for marine use, but a couple group 31’s should do it. Huge differences here in battery size recommends. For each pair of batteries:

8D = 200A/hr - 1375 mca - 290lbs - $1100.00
4D = 140A/hr - 1150 mca – 215lbs - $780.00
31 = 115A/hr - 750 mca – 106lbs - $440.00

One thought was a smaller starting bat (size 31) with a manual connect switch to bridge with the house system, if ever needed. House system is:

8L16 = 370A/hr – 1900 mca

A battery designed for ‘starting’ is preferred over a duel-use or other deep-cycle battery. Suggestions? Tips? Thanks! -joe
