I have a Evinrude 70HP Triumph model Ser# J0003789. My father in law gave me the motor and boat just before he passed away. Unfortunatly it sat for a while. I want to make sure I have compression before I start forking large sums of money into it. Question 1. The starter will not come down. I took it off the motor and hooked it up to the battery and it turned freely. What part do I need to replace to bring the starter back down under the flywheel.

Question 2 - Ate the cannisters still available for the tilt and trim. The one next to the motor is a big rust pile.

Question 3 Small cracks in 2 of the 3 coild. What causes this and should I replace them right off the bat?

Thanks,

Rick

Question 1: The starter gear is obviously needing some grease. Apply a lite coat of Lubriplate or synthetic to the shaft and then tap the gear on top. It should come down.
Question 2: Check with a dealer. Parts for the tilt/trim can add up quickly, so if it works, leave it alone and live with the rusty look.
Question 3: If the coils leak you will see this at night (or in a dark shop) with the cowl cover removed and the engine running. If the engine runs smooth, the coils will be good.......piniongear

The coils need replacing if they are cracked. They may work just fine sitting in your yard or a shop, but leak current when put under a load.

Just another 2 cents worth, before adding the lube to the bendix on the starter, put a few drops of WD-40 or other lube on the shaft and work the bendix up and down a few times. Then add the bendix grease.
