Starting issues when Motor is turned

Hello everyone,

I have sort of a unique issue going on with my outboard lately. I was out on the lake and went to start the motor and I got nothing, no cranking or anything. I ended up starting the motor basically by arcing across the starter solenoid like you would a ford motor.

Come to find out the motor did not want to start when it was not facing forward! I do realize that this has to be an issue with the harness, however I do not see any exposed wires. The harness feels like it is seating all the way in, I did find the prong boot that is bolted to the motor was a bit loose and I tightened it hoping it would solve the issue. Now it will actually die when I turn the motor. Anyone have this same issue before?

The motor is a 150hp inline 6.

Thanks,

Rob

It is a 1975 motor. I replaced the control box with the wiring harness from another boat, because my old control box was shot. It ran and worked great...just lately this issue has happened.

First try enlarging the male pins on the motor wiring harness socket by carefulling sliding an exact-o knife blade or similar tool down the slot one each male pin so to tighten each pins connection with the female socket.

Once you are sure all pin/socket connections are good, retest starting, any further problem could be a broken wire where the harness flexes during turns and will require further Volt/Ohms testing between the socket/pins and the ignition switch.
