Starting Issues

I have a 1983 Johnson 90hp V4 that I cannot get started. The starter is working correctly and I am getting sparks from all of the ignition coils. I could possibly have salt water in the fuel system. I switched to a six gallon tank from the inboard tank. I can get the engine to fire occasionally but will not stay on. If I have water in the system, any recommendations on flushing?

Re: Starting Issues

Howdy, Horaceman.

First, drain the carbs. Drain the tank and refill with fresh fuel. Then, with the fuel line to the carbs disconnected, pump your primer until nothing but fuel comes out.

Squirt fuel mix into carbs to start her and keep her running until she will run without it.

If that doesn't work, you may have a failed fuel pump and/or clogged filter.

Install a fuel filter/water seperator in your fuel line between tank and primer bulb.

Good luck. :)

Re: Starting Issues

I removed the air silencer and base to get to the carbs. There were two screws for each carb on the side. I was only able to remove three of the four. Is it imperative that I remove the fourth screw or is removing one on that carb enough? I flushed the carbs with new gas from a six gallon tank. I also checked the fuel filter on the side of the motor and it looked clean. I already had a water seperator coming off of my inboard tank. I removed it and found a substantial amount of water and particles (probably sand). Put everything back together and tried cranking. Still cannot get it to crank.
