Hi, a friend of mine has a boat that has been sitting for 10 years, I was wonderring what exactly it might take to start the outboard, I didn't catch the model number but its a 70HP Johnson seahorse, he said it has barely been used, the motor looked brand new on the inside, well besides some dirt that seeped in the case, I was wonderring what I should do to try and start this thing up. Any help is appreciated, I don't know much about boats, but I know cars.

1. Start with fresh fuel/oil (one pint TCW-3 rated outboard oil to six gallons of 87 octane gas).

2. Squirt sonme WD-40 in th plug holes.

3. Start it.

4. IMMEDIATELY look for cooling water exiting out of the side of the lower cowl. Pay close attention to the head temperature. You should be able to keep your fingers on the head, without getting burned, for a few seconds. They run about 150 degrees.

so I don't need to get cooling water into the engine to start it?

You will have it hooked up to a water hose with the muffs....right? No problem then.

At your level of lack of knowledge (no dig intended) you would do well to have a marine mechanic or at least a knowledgeable driveway mechanic get it running for you.

hey she runs who woulda thunk it, see SoLittle I can figure out what I'm doin :) but one little question, how long should it take before water starts to come outa the cowl, I didn't notice any but I didn't let it run too long either, head never got hot...water pump might be shot too but I dunno...

Did you start it with lower unit in some container or with a hose and "earmuffs" on ?? If it was in a container, water level must reach the level on mid-section where the water pump is located, on your motor, just above the joint between lower unit and midsection. If waterhose is correctly on, I'v never seen any that didnt cool.
