Starting Motor on Outboard Stand

This weekend I am planning on building an outboard motor stand/ dolly. I have a 1962 40HP Johnson. I want to clean it up, paint it and do a thorough check up and maintenance on the motor. I am putting it on a 69 MFG Niagara which is all repaired and brand new paint job and everything. I need to be able to start the motor on this stand. How can I do this using the electric start? There is also a solenoid in the electrical box on the side of the splash well do I need to use this? I want to work on this motor without putting it back on the boat yet, for fear it will be a mess on my new paint job. Even though the motor runs fine I want to make sure if it will be worthy of my new almost finished project.

Don't bother pulling the solenoid out for that. Just buy or borrow a set of jumper cables. Attach & secure the positive (red) one to the fat wire that comes off the stud on the starter motor, and the negative one to the other (ground) fat wire.
Then when you want to start it, just attach the other end of the jumpers to a battery. Clamp one side on, and touch the terminal with the other clamp until the outboard starts. Then let go.
Alternatively, you can wrap a rope around the flywheel and pull. You'll notice the flywheel is notched for a knot in the end of the rope for this purpose. You do not need a battery to run this engine.
To stop, either choke the engine, or connect the two small black wires comming from the engine together. Connecting those wires will kill the sparks on both cylinders. You can ground out each individually to kill only one cylinder. Watch out for these when the engine's running - they can deliver a nasty bite. The centre terminal on the vaccum cutout switch will do the same!
You might want to check out some of the stands other people have built. Go to the "Project Boats and Backyard Boatbuilding" section and search for "outboard stand".

Good luck this weekend!

Here is mine I built a few years back. Thats my 125 horse Merc on it in the first pic, it handles a lot of weight. I have it on castors so I can roll it around. If you do run a motor on a stand, tie the motor off so it doesn't flop around while running, it'll want to move.

My one looks too embarrasing to post. But it does have 'casters'!
What all these stands are missing (and mine, but only till real soon now) is a little shelf to put stuff on.
Hint: The lower cowl makes a really lousy place to put stuff on.

moganhunter,

Yes, that is my stand posted by rickdlboat. Thanks Rick. The engine mounted on that one is a 90 hp. The whole stand is made of 2X4's and is more than adequate. I think I had less than $20.00 into it, including the casters.

As you can see the battery is mounted to the bottom of the stand and the tilt/trim solonoid box is mounted to the other side of the mounting platform.

I made the legs wide enough so that I could slide in a cut down 55 gallon plastic drum for running the engine to check water pump output. Usually, I just ran it with the flush muffler though.

Thank you all! I finished mine tonight and it works great. I took a little from each post and put it in to one stand. Here is a pic.

moganhunter

Looks Good! And you're welcome djohns. I must say that your prop looks a little shaky. :D Good idea Paul on the shelf! Would be very easy to do, too. Beats running around to the bench grabbing parts!

I thought I was the only one who wanted info on how to build an outboard stand.

I did a search on google and nothing good came up.

After seeing your picture, I'm embarassed with the stand I build.

I used two metal sawhorse brackets and a 2 X 8 for the transom.

It is only for my 7.5.

Like the shelves and castors....

Tx.

Joe
